High Velocity Oxy Fuel (HVOF) coating systems are basically the same as the combustion powder spray processes except that these processes have been developed to produce extremely high gas velocity. There are a number of HVOF guns using different methods to achieve high velocity spraying.
One HVOF approach has a water cooled high pressure combustion chamber and long exhaust nozzle. It utilizes a fuel mixture that is fed into the combustion chamber, producing a hot high pressure gaseous flame which is forced down a nozzle at super-sonic velocity.
Powder is fed axially into the HVOF combustion exhaust under high pressure axially into the centre of the nozzle.
Carbide and ceramic coatings applied via HVOF exhibit excellent wear and corrosion properties and metallic coatings provide excellent corrosion and oxidation properties.
